Cassandra Darrough named Tribal Coordinator for NV Division of Emergency Management
Nevada DEM Announces New Tribal Coordinator for Emergency Response
The Nevada Division of Emergency Management (DEM) is pleased to name Cassandra Darrough as DEM’s Tribal Coordinator, helping with emergency management support for Nevada’s 27 federally-recognized Tribal Nations in close collaboration with Nevada Indian Commission.
DEM is the state agency responsible for the administration of emergency preparedness, prevention, response, recovery and mitigation.
Darrough began her career as a volunteer in emergency response in 2004. Since 2004, Darrough received certifications as an instructor in wildland and structural firefighting. She also gained certifications as an advanced emergency medical technician and community emergency response team, or CERT, instructor.
A Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe member, Darrough traces her ancestry to the Walker River Paiute Tribe and Te-Moak Tribe of Western Shoshone. She is serving her second term as an elected member of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribal Council.
“An advocate and presenter for public safety, Cassandra is passionate about the whole community approach to emergency management within Tribal nations. Additionally, Cassandra is honored to have received a Nevada State Governor appointment, initially to the Nevada Citizen Corps Council and the Nevada Resilience Advisory Committee as one of two representatives for the urban Tribal population and Nevada’s 27 federally-recognized Tribes.”
“The Darrough family name is well known throughout the Great Basin,” said Stacey Montooth, Nevada Indian Commission executive director. “I have no doubt that Cassie will continue her family’s legacy of service. She brings to the State of Nevada expertise in emergency management and a personal knowledge and the unique aspects of tribal governments and native communities.”
Darrough, who began work as DEM’s tribal coordinator earlier this month, joins Crystal Harjo, the division’s tribal health coordinator, for tribal emergency management support in Nevada.
