Nevada Tribal Legislation Day Blessing
given by Florence Millett from
the Duckwater Shoshone Reservation

Tune in at 11:30 am to hear Florence Millet provide a blessing to start today’s Nevada Assembly’s Floor Session. Miss Florence is a treasured elder who speaks fluent Shoshone.  Born in Tonopah, Nevada to Danny and Lillian Millett, “Grandma Flo” is 83 years-young.  She has six children, 14 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. She enjoys cheering her grandchildren on at youth sporting events and tournaments and traveling to pow wows to watch her granddaughter dance–teen girls jingle.  She grew up on the Duckwater Shoshone Reservation and loves going back home to visit her brother, Jerry, sister Mary Lou, as well as visiting her sister Betty, in Fallon, Nevada. As they all speak the Shoshone language, she cherishes any opportunity to speak the language.  A long time teacher of Shoshone, today Florence enjoys doing craft projects with her young great granddaughters.  Before COVID-19, she enjoyed visiting her friends and the local senior center. For Florence, spending as much time with her family is the greatest joy in her life.

Our Father,
Thank you for this beautiful day.
Thank you for the safety in our travels to attend this legislative meeting today.
Lord give all the Speakers strength and courage to have open minds.
Bless each of them and comfort them.
Lord the Coronavirus is taking the lives of so many of our loved ones.
LORD! Help our Scientists and Doctors find a cure. We all need to be protected from getting this virus. Bless each person who are involved in helping give the virus shots to the people. Lord it is so hard losing a loved one knowing we cannot be there to hold their hand to the end. Tears and heartaches.
Lord we are one Nation. We are all one, we are all family. Give blessings, good thoughts to all people who need you. Let them reach up and ask for forgiveness. Lord I know you hear us.
I ask you Lord to be with all our families and loved ones wherever they may be, whatever they may be doing. Watch over and Bless each of them.
Lord, Bless this day, the beauty all around. Protect us all. Keep us safe. Always be with us in each step we take day by day.
May God Bless each of you in work and travel safe.
AMEN!

Attending UNLV was important to Annika as it allowed her to stay connected with family in Henderson, Nev., and offered a lot of growth for my major. Annika is planning a career in community work around mental health, especially for Indigenous youth who are at high risk for suicide.
Especially now during COVID, Annika advocates for mental health to be prioritized. She seeks open and genuine conversations about our struggles with the pandemic, because she believes providing and receiving support makes all the difference.
